Required Auto Insurance in Iowa

Iowa requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Iowa requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $15,000 per accident.

Iowa Teen Driving Laws

Iowa operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: A Learner's Permit, Intermediate License, and Full Driver's License.

  • Learner's Permit: At 14, Iowa teens may apply for their learner's permit. To obtain their permit, teen drivers must pass a knowledge exam. A learner's permit allows teens to practice driving with licensed adult supervision.
  • Intermediate License: At 16, teen drivers can apply for an intermediate driver's license after holding a learner's permit for a year. Teens must complete a driver's education course to obtain their intermediate license. Teen drivers cannot drive between the hours of midnight and 5:00 AM and may not carry more than one passenger under the age of 18, except siblings.
  • Full Driver's License: At 17, drivers may apply for a full license after holding their intermediate license for at least 12 months. Teens also must complete 10 hours of supervised driving (two hours at night) while holding their intermediate license prior to obtaining their full license.

Please be aware of additional driving restrictions for teen drivers in Iowa.
