Required Auto Insurance in Maine

Maine requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Maine requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident.

Maine Teen Driving Laws

Maine operates under a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) Law, which includes three stages: Learner’s Permit, Intermediate License, and Unrestricted License.

  • Learner’s Permit: At 15, teens can obtain a learner’s permit after passing a written exam and completing a driver education course. A learner’s permit allows teens to fulfill their required 70 hours of driving practice (10 hours must be done after dark).
  • Intermediate License: Teen drivers can obtain an intermediate license after holding a learner’s permit for 6 months and passing a driving test. With an intermediate license, teen drivers may operate a vehicle unsupervised between midnight and 5:00 AM for the first 270 days. However, teen drivers must be supervised when driving between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
  • Unrestricted License: To obtain an unrestricted license, drivers must hold their intermediate license for 270 days without any traffic violations.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Maine.
